The twenty first annual Adirondack Canoe Classic, the 90 mile canoe
experience from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, took place September 5 - 7,
2003! The 90 -miler has become the highlight of the paddling year for
many canoeists, kayakers, and guideboaters from across the Northeast,
and as far away as Texas, Colorado, Montana, and Paris, France. 257
vessels of every paddle - able description raced, endured and toured the
original "highways of the Adirondacks" over three challenging, fall
foliage filled days. Paddlers wended their way from Old Forge to Blue
Mountain Lake on Friday, canoed from Long Lake to Tupper Lake on
Saturday, and navigated the Saranac Lake Chain from Fish Creek to Lake
Flower on Sunday. 251 boats crossed the Finish Line at the Cedar tree in
Prescott Park in Saranac Lake.
The prestigious Terry Healy award, given to the paddler, volunteer or
pit crew who best exemplifies the true spirit of the Adirondack Canoe
Classic, was presented to Lyn MacAlpine, Francine Perretta, and Sara
Merle. Mileage pins were presented to all participants. There were 64
first year paddlers and 2 people, Holly Crouch and Ray Morris, who
earned their 21 year pins for paddling in every 90 Miler since its
inception in 1983.
