The Saranac Lake Community

Nestled among the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains and Lakes, the Village of Saranac Lake is a friendly, clean, safe and charming historic community. The community plans for its future so that it may continue to offer employment, cultural, art, recreational and shopping opportunities. These make Saranac Lake an attractive destination for visitors and new businesses, not to mention a wonderful place to grow-up, receive an education, work, raise a family or retire. This quality of life, paired with its small town character, makes Saranac Lake a marvelous place to live and a memorable place to visit.

One does not have to simply take our word for the reputation we have. Saranac Lake has achieved many prestigious awards and citations that attest to our sense of community, our cooperative small town spirit, and our continued bright future. Residents and visitors are attracted to the area’s unparalleled outdoor setting and the Village’s historic and vibrant downtown.

Community Awards

Over the years, Saranac Lake has been given many prestigious awards and distinctions. Most recently Saranac Lake was named one of the top “100 Summer Destinations” by the New York Post and was featured in the National Geographic Adventure magazine article “Best Places to Live: Where to Live and Play Now!” The Saranac Lake community is proud of its many distinctions and recognitions, but is especially proud of being named an All-America City and one of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations.

All-America City

All-America City logoIn 1998, Saranac Lake won the coveted All America City Award given by the National Civic League annually to ten cities in the United States. The award is the oldest community recognition program in the nation and recognizes communities whose citizens work together to identify and tackle community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon results. Since the program’s inception in 1949, more than 4,000 communities have competed and over 500 have been named All-America Cities. We are proud to be one of the very few to win this honor.

Dozen Distinctive Destinations

Dozen Distintive Destinations logoSaranac Lake was selected in 2006 as one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Each year since 2000, the Trust has selected 12 vacation destinations across the United States that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation and revitalization.
