Bigelow Road

Walking north from the northern access along Rt. 55 for the Bloomingdale Bog Trail, birders will quickly find a small wetland where American Bittern, Common Yellowthroat, and other wetland birds can be found. Like the portion of the trail which runs through the bog itself, this section of trail offers birders an array of warbler species and opportunities to see boreal species such as Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, and Gray Jay. About a half mile from Rt. 55 the trail intersects with Bigelow Road, an excellent stretch of boreal habitat. Black-backed Woodpeckers nest along the road and all of the boreal birds can be found.  Listen for Yellow-bellied Flycatchers and warblers such as Nashville and Magnolia Warblers as well as Ruby-crowned Kinglets.  Since species like Gray Jays and Boreal Chickadees are year-round residents, they can also be found in winter when the road is also a great place to look for Red and White-winged Crossbills. The bog trail continues north from Bigelow reaching a nice beaver wetland in a half mile where birds like American Bittern can be found. It is also a good place for Boreal Chickadee.
