St. Regis Mountain

One of the recently dubbed Saranac Lake 6ers, St. Regis Mountain is a nice hike with an excellent view of the numerous lakes which compose much of the northern Adirondacks.  And while a seven mile round trip hike may not be the first choice of many folks as they bird, it is worth the trip. The first two plus miles of trail are relatively easy and rolling and take birders through deciduous and hemlock forests where Red-eyed Vireos, Winter Wrens, Black-throated Green Warblers, and Ovenbirds are common. Many other species of warblers can also be found and as the trail begins to climb the mountain, it reaches mixed deciduous-coniferous forests where Nashville and Black-throated Blue Warblers can be heard singing. The beautiful woods also offer homes to Barred Owls which can often be heard hooting in the evening – or even the day.
