Grab the shades — summer is here! July is filled with warm days, refreshing dips in the lake, plenty of ice cream, and tons of events. From small-town, community bike rides to one of the largest rugby tournaments in the word, July in Saranac Lake is non-stop fun!

Featured event

Can-Am Rugby, July 28-30: The Can-Am Rugby Tournament was created in 1973 by the Mountaineers Rugby Club and is celebrating its 44th year. Over 100 teams will be competing in the three-day tournament. What is rugby? A game played with an oval ball and two teams, each consisting of 15 players. Players can carry, pass, or kick the ball to the end zone to score. Highest score wins.

Never watched a rugby game? This is your chance. While the rules of the game can be confusing, the camaraderie for the sport is contagious. You will be cheering players on in no time.

Wild experience

The Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center is dedicated to “fostering connections with nature for students, local residents, and regional visitors.” This summer, their recreational opportunities and experiential programs knock it out of the park! You could literally try a new thing every week, and come back for more.

Guided naturalist walks, every Wednesday in July.

Guided canoe paddle on Barnum Pond, every Wednesday through Sunday in July.

Yoga on the deck with Kripalu certified instructor, every Tuesday and Thursday in July.

Guided morning bird walks, every Saturday in July.

Local flavor

In July Saranac Lakers are outdoors, with their kids or dogs or backpacks, swapping summer adventure stories. If you want in on the action just show up to one of these events. It's real small-town fun for the whole family.

Saranac Lake Village Farmers Market, July: Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Riverside Park (corner of Main and River).

Fun Run, July: Every Thursday at 6 p.m. the runs start in Riverside Park. This free event includes distances of a quarter-mile, half-mile, 1 mile, and 4.5 miles.

Community Ride, July 12 and 26: From 6 to 7 p.m. the rides start and end at Berkeley Green (corner of Main and Broadway). All you need is a bike and helmet for these family friendly group bicycle rides.

Music

Saranac Lake has you covered with summer jams — the way they should be — outdoors and free, feel-good and foot-tapping. We will deliver your dose of musical sunshine!

Music on the Green, July: Every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Berkeley Green.

Party on the Patio, July: Every Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Waterhole.

Lake Placid Sinfonietta Free Community Concert, July 14: A professional chamber orchestra of twenty musicians from across the country. Listening to the Lake Placid Sinfonietta in the Harrietstown town hall has become an annual tradition.

Art

Art has a strong hold on Saranac Lake year round — and that’s the way we like it! It only takes one visit to recognize what a creative community Saranac Lake is. Take advantage of the summer months by getting outdoors and interacting with art.

Art Walk, July 20: From 5 to 7:30 p.m. There are some 30 outdoor venues for the visual, literary, and performing arts scattered throughout the downtown Saranac Lake area. Venues include parks, galleries, nonprofits, and downtown businesses. This a free, self-guided, family event showcasing creative talents.

ArtWorks Studio Tours, July 28-30: The tour highlights the amazing talent of the artists and craftspeople in the Saranac Lake area. It is your opportunity to see and learn how an artist works — what they do, how they develop their ideas, and the various steps their work goes through — in their own intimate space.

History

There is a rich history here. And we are lucky to have so many people to share it, to celebrate it, and to keep it alive. In Saranac Lake, we make history cool.

Downtown Tour, July 12: Meet at 10:30 a.m. in Riverside Park. Take a walking tour of historic downtown Saranac Lake. The tour concludes with a visit to the Saranac Laboratory Museum on Church Street.

Cure Cottage Museum, July 19: Meet at 10:30 a.m. on the porch of 103 Helen Street. Visit a patient room and cure porch in a historic private home.
