SARANAC LAKE, NY—This Adirondack village is hosting its third “6er” event called the Saranac Lake 6er Relay, a team relay race, on Saturday, October 14, beginning and ending at Berkeley Green, the site of the now-famous 6er bell.
This relay event comes four years after the initial 6er race on May 25, 2013, and the Winter 6er race on December 21 of that same year - both of which drew hundreds of hikers and prevailed amid unusual and difficult weather conditions. Ironically, the inclement weather broadened the marketing of this hiking challenge through word-of-mouth and social media.
“The 6er program, with over 2,500 registered hikers who’ve completed hiking our six peaks to date, has been a phenomenal success. Now that we’ve caught our breath, we’re ready to host a new and very real Adirondack original - a team relay race through our six beautiful peaks," Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau said.
Each team will consist of six members who will individually ascend and descend one of the six peaks beginning with a shotgun start at 6 a.m. from Berkeley Green in the center of the village’s downtown. A team member will ascend their team’s initial peak and then descend to hand-off a punch card to a team-member at the trailhead, with the next team member proceeding to the subsequent trail head to ascend and descend the next mountain and hand-off to another team member until all six peaks are completed.
Besides the overall championship award, six other honors will also be bestowed: the youngest team; the oldest team; the spirit award; the team from farthest away; the first high school team to finish, and the first college team to finish.
Qualifying details, event rules, as well as a relay race application may be downloaded online by accessing the 6er Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/SaranacLake6er/ or at SaranacLake.com: http://www.saranaclake.com/activities/outdoor/saranac-lake-6 .
Hikers will begin at 6 a.m., October 14. The official recording of finishers will end at 6 p.m. with an honor system recording thereafter. The event concludes 6 a.m. the next morning, October 15 - 24 hours after the start time. An award ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, just after the 6 p.m. official recording close in Berkeley Green, even if all teams have not arrived. Teams have 12 hours to complete the relay to be a part of the ceremony, and 24 hours to be considered a 6er relay finisher.
