The Hays Brook Trail begins from a parking area along Route 30 3.7 miles north of the junction of Routes 86 and 30 in Paul Smiths. It is a good backcountry skiing trail in winter, and the trail crosses both the Osgood River and Hays Brook. The smaller Hays Brook trail diverges from the main truck trail, reconnecting with the truck trail about a mile further along the route, creating an easy loop.
Parts of the trail are easy to follow, while others are best followed with a map if you don’t know the area. The trail eventually reaches a meadow with lean-tos 3.3 miles from the trailhead – a good turnaround point for a day trip.
