Blue Mountain Loop

The woods here offer an ever-changing landscape, from blueberry barrens from the great forest fire of the turn of the century to river views along the St. Regis River.

LENGTH: 46 mile loop that can be done in sections, and it really is a beginner skill level even on the dirt parts of Blue Mountain Road. Keese Mills Rd at the beginning and the Santa Clara Rd/Route 458 sections are both paved.

DIRECTIONS:At the intersection of Routes 3 and 30, near Paul Smiths College, take Keeses Mill Road which turns into Blue Mountain Road. Halfway through the loop, take a right (east) onto Santa Clara Road/Route 458, and return to route 30 with a right hand turn to return to Paul Smiths College. A left at the Route 30 intersection will take you to scenic Meacham Lake in less than a mile.

After crossing the large St. Regis bridge, the trailhead for Azure Mountain is on the left, about 1.5 miles further. It's only a quarter mile hike to the rocky summit, with its beautifully restored 1918 fire tower. Well worth the side trip!
