Route 86 Loop

The Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths offers hiking trails, hands-on exhibits, live birds of prey, and insights into the ancient mountains. This ride follows Forest Home Road, past Little Colby Pond and Lake Clear, and also features the Fish Hatchery.

LENGTH: 37 miles with 2238 feet of climb.

DIRECTIONS: Take Broadway out of downtown, take left at light on Ampersand Avenue, right on Forest Home Road, County Route 18. Stay on until the right turn onto Fish Hatchery Road, which leads to Little Clear Pond. When leaving this road, take a left at the stop sign on State Route 30, on to the VIC. Make a loop by leaving the VIC with a right onto State Route 30, left onto State Route 86, and a left onto Jones Pond Rd/County Route 31. Right onto County Route 60, left at the stop sign onto State Route 86, back to Saranac Lake.
