There are many variations of orienteering which
can be enjoyed by all ages. Here are just a few,
and keep in mind you can alter any of them by using
skiing, snowshoeing, or you could come up with your
own game.
Variations
1.
One option when orienteering is to make it a competitive
running sport. In this variation you could get a group of
friends together at Dewey Mt. and each person will get a map
to study and a card with each station marked on them. Then at
the same time everyone runs to each station marked on the map,
and when they get to each station they either punch or stamp their
card. To make the race a little more challenging there are
obstacles like, water, marshes, woods, and hills along the way.
Finally, the one who finishes first is the winner.

2.
Another form of orienteering is line orienteering. In this
variation you must follow the same route, stopping at stations
on the marked out route until you've reached the end. Whoever
reaches the end of the route with all of the stamps in the correct
order wins.

3.
Another form is route orienteering. In this variation the
route is marked on the the ground, not on a map. While going
along the route, the players have to indicate on a map where
the markings are on the trail.
|
4.
Last, there is score orienteering. With this the markings
can be visited in any order. There is a mapped out area
and the markings have scores on them. When you find a marking
you write down your score and move on to the next. These scores
are assigned according to distance or location. Whoever has the
highest score in the end is the winner.
