Upper Saranac Lake

Upper Saranac Lake, while it may look like big water, has plenty of bays and inlets where you’ll find some solitude – and fish. Browns, rainbows and lake trout are all stocked here by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, but there is much more to this, the largest of the Saranac chain of lakes.

It’s a good smallmouth water, and the northern pike can be very cooperative. If you’re fishing with kids, the perch, bluegills, rock bass and pumpkinseeds will keep them busy for quite a while. The lake is also very accessible.

There is a state-owned public access, with hard-surface ramp, at Saranac Inn, a half-mile from Route 30, with parking for 50 cars and trailers. A beach launch access at Indian Carry off Route 3 is eight miles east of the Village of Tupper Lake, with parking for 18 cars.

You’ll also find access via a portage from Middle Saranac (take Weller Carry to south shore or Bartlett Carry to east shore.)
