WILLARD HANMER GUIDEBOAT & CANOE RACE 2002 RESULTS
| The guideboat took center stage at the 40th annual Willard Hanmer Guideboat, Canoe and Kayak Races, organized by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce the Adirondack Arc, and MAC'S Canoe Livery, in Saranac Lake on a beautiful Sunday July 7, 2002. The event opened with a parade of over 20 guideboats circumnavigating Lake Flower. Leading the parade were Ashley and Emily Doyle in guideboats built by their father, Tim Doyle, a former Saranac Lake guideboat champion. The chase boat in the parade was rowed by Chris "Woody" Woodward, current owner and operator of the Hanmer Traditional Guideboat shop on Lake Street in Saranac Lake.
Emily Doyle won the Junior Guideboat race in a time of 18:06. Ashley Doyle won the Women's race, and was the fastest traditional guideboat on the down river course. Her time was 31:20. Mary Brown won the Modern guideboat race in 34:42. James Bullis won the Men's Modern Guideboat race in 29:56. Chris Woodward won the Men's Traditional Guideboat race in 33:02. The Two Women Guideboat race was won by Sue Patterson and Susan Mitchell in 25:46. The "Grandaddy" Guideboat race, where the accumulative age of both competitors must exceed 100 years, was won by Jesse Corum III and Paul Ericson in an adjusted time of 23:47.
In the Canoe and Kayak races, Marathon kayaker John Ders turned in the fastest race of the day completing the 5 + mile course in 30:10. The fastest solo canoeist was Terry Kent at 30:44. The fastest tandem canoe was Roger Henry and Alec Davis at 30:46. The fastest recreational kayaker was Jim Sausville at 36:20. The Rub a Dub Dub race (four people in a canoe) was won by Paul's Paddlers of Paul Smith's College - Jim Tucker, Lucas Kramer, Dub McCullough, and Stu Douglas.
