From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 86 toward Paul Smiths. Continue for 5-miles to Route 186 on the left. Follow Route 186 for 4-miles to its end at Route 30. Follow Route 30 toward Tupper Lake for just under 3.0 miles to Fish Hatchery Road on the right. Follow here for 0.5 miles to the dirt road entrance for Little Clear Pond. Cross the railroad tracks and take a left onto another dirt road and dive this to the parking for Fish Pond.
From the parking lot walk back to the railroad tracks and follow them west along a well-developed path. The route along the railroad tracks is very flat as you might imagine. Rat Pond will come in on your left after about 0.25 miles. Little Rainbow Falls will be in another 0.5 miles.
After you experience Little Rainbow Falls you will have to retrace your steps to Rat Pond. Near a sandy hill look for a trail leading north with a Canoe Area sign at the start. Follow here and in about 0.5 miles of easy hiking you will come to the Fish Pond Trail. At the Fish Pond Trail hang a right and this will lead you back to your car in about 0.75 miles.
