Lake Colby

This lake has plenty to explore either on kayak, canoe or SUP. The lake is kind of shaped like a star and has ample bays to explore, go fishing and go birding. Eagles have been known to reside on the western shore. There are state campsites along the western shore as well.

This can be a very large lake when you are in a small boat and expect to see small motorboats using the area as well. The W and NW bays have an attractive marshy area with a lazy inlet where the lake gains some of the waters.

Shoreline length: Approx. 4-miles, this measurement is based on using the railroad tracks as a southern boundary.

How to get there: From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 86 toward Paul Smiths. Continue to the Shore of Lake Colby, still within the Town of Saranac Lake, it will be on the left. You can launch from the beach, the grass shore or the state boat launch, all along Route 3.

Type of launch: Roadside, less than 100 feet

Type of water: Flat water but can be considered big water during less than perfect conditions. Weather can move in fast and cause whitecaps over the surface of the lake. Motorboats are allowed on the lake, but typically they are smaller fishing boats that create much less wake.
