Bone Pond Loop

If you need to park at the start of the road you will snowshoe back along this access road and cross the railroad tracks, the trail is straight ahead. From the summer parking area you will snowshoe past Little Green Pond to your left and Green Pond on your right. Cross over an outlet, watching to spot and otter, and pass through a state barrier. From here you are much more in the wilds of forest. In a short amount of easy walking time and only one small hill you arrive at Bone Pond where a short spur trail will bring you down to it. Continuing on the loop you will pass by Bone Pond with it to your right and go over a couple small rolling hills and then quickly come out to the Fish Pond Truck Trail.  Take a left on the road and then another left and snowshoe along the snowmobile trail back to your car.

Families with Kids:    2.5 to 3 Hours

Experienced Snowshoers:    2 to 2.5 hours

Out of Shape Snowshoers: 2.5 to 3 hours

Trailhead Location: 

From the intersection of Route 86 and Route 3 in Saranac Lake follow Route 86 toward Paul Smiths. Follow here to Route 186 and then follow here to Route 30. Continue straight on Route 30 and continue for just under 4-miles to Fish Hatchery Road on the right. Turn down Fish Hatchery Road for about 0.1 miles to the access on the left; you may need to park roadside if not plowed. 

Difficulty: 1=easiest, 5=hardest

Two: This is an easy and mostly flat trail but its lack of consistent use could make it slightly more difficult

Additional Important Information:

Snowshoeing over a frozen body of water is an Adirondack past time; it can access you to areas not seen by most in the summer. With that being said it is a dangerous activity to cross frozen water bodies and should be done with care and respect for your environment. Know the ice conditions and be prepared for anything including heavy winds, snow drifts, whiteouts, slushy conditions, and thin ice.
