Second Pond

You will be launching your boat at the Saranac Lake Islands State Campground. Even though you will not be camping on the islands this is the best access point for parking as well. There may be a day-use fee to park there. You can also park on the opposite side of the pond at a small gravel parking area and portage steeply downhill to the water’s edge. This state boat launch area has recently been upgraded with excellent boating facilities.

Second Pond is simply a widening of the Saranac River with a small shoreline. The paddle is a very attractive one on its own and especially in the fall of the year with the colors. Second Pond is an access pond for Lower Saranac Lake to the west, and Oseetah Lake to the east.

Pond Size – Approximate Shoreline Length: 2.1 miles

How to get there: From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 3 toward Tupper Lake. Continue for 4.25 miles or so to the Saranac Lake Islands State Campground, boat launch area on the left.

Type of launch: Roadside

Portage/Carry Details: Less than 50 feet, hard paved surface

Type of water: Well sheltered, calm and flat under most conditions.
