Upper Saranac Lake

Upper Saranac Lake is the largest of the chain lakes and, by far, has the most to offer. This can be very apparent by how busy this lake gets. There are three excellent access points for this lake, but others do exist. The lake can be accessed as well from Middle Saranac Lake and Fish Creek Ponds. Take plenty of time and come back often to explore one of the largest lakes in the Adirondacks. With its several attractive bays, miles and miles of shoreline, and wetland areas it will surely be tops on your list.

How to get there:

Indian Carry: From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 3 toward Tupper Lake. Continue for around 12 miles to Indian Carry Road on the right. Drive this to the end.

Bartlett Carry Road: Continue about 1-mile further on Route 3 to Bartlett Carry Road. Drive up Bartlett Carry Road for around 1.5-mile to the launch on the left. Be sure to park in designated areas only.

State boat launch: From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 3 toward Tupper Lake. Continue for around 15 miles to Route 30 on the right. Drive Route 30 to the Saranac Inn Road on the right, approximately 9 miles. Drive down the Saranac Inn Road to the state launch on the right.

Type of launch:

Indian Carry: Less than 100 feet to a dock on the lake

Bartlett Carry Road: Roadside dirt launch

State boat launch: Large area with different approaches to the shore. All easy and short.

Type of water:

This is a very large lake with almost no protection from the elements or windy conditions. While on some days it can be very calm, other days it can whip up some decent sized whitecaps. The conditions are a bit more favorable around the islands and can be used a sheltered paddling as needed. Always be on the lookout for motorboats they can be abundant.
