McKenzie Pond

This paddle adventure is worth every bit of the effort you will need to put forth to reach it. It is a 1.75 mile portage to the put-in along a well-used foot trail. A lightweight boat or cart will be needed for this distance.

McKenzie Pond is nestled in between Baker Mountain to the west and Little McKenzie Mountain to the north. McKenzie Pond is also part of the western border of the 36,200 acre McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area which brings to light some of the most pristine areas of the park.

Once on the water be sure to paddle over and check out the lone, dot island, informally known as White Pine Island, because of its massive white pine on the shore. Also paddle softly and keep an eye peeled for that rare sighting of moose in the area. Wildlife is plenty here, so don’t forget to bring that camera.

Distances: Launch to North Bay – 1.1 miles

Launch to Tadds Bay 1.0 miles

Launch to Moody Bay 1.05 miles

 

How to get there: From the intersection of Route 73 and Route 86 in Lake Placid, follow Route 86 toward Saranac Lake. Continue for 6.5 miles through the Town of Ray Brook. Look for McKenzie Pond Road on the right. Follow McKenzie Pond Road for 1.4 miles to the Jackrabbit Trail on the right, marked with the red trail sign. This is the portage trail to McKenzie Pond.
