Moose Pond

The trail to this pretty pond is an old dirt road and combines gentle climbs with sections that are virtually flat. It is the perfect easy hike, ski, or snowshoe with the additional possibility of an easy camping trip. After crossing the footbridge over the Saranac River, the trail swings right, climbs ever so gently, and is then mostly flat to a junction at 1.4 miles from the bridge. The trail right leads down about 200 yards to the shore of the pond at a rocky outcropping that provides a great view of the pond. The trail straight ahead leads to a gentler route down to the pond that goes past an old chimney to a designated campsite. While some maps show a trail continuing to the north end of the pond, there is no longer any trace of such a trail.

Trailhead: From the intersection of Routes 3 and 86 in Saranac Lake, follow Route 3 north toward Bloomingdale. Go about 4 miles and look for a small dirt road that passes closely by a farmhouse and down to a parking area before the footbridge. There is no trail sign at Route 3. Parking in winter is along Route 3.
