Panther Marsh

Panther Marsh is not an official name for this small body of water, in fact it is unnamed on all maps. It is located east of Panther Mountain and looks to be a wide open body of water; it is not wide open. The pond at one time was open but is now an interesting small paddle through a grassy corridor. The water resembles a river meandering through a wetland. With all honesty, not the most invigorating paddle experience, but the birding is great, the wildflowers are suburb – when in season and the view up at Panther Mountain to the west is pretty neat as well.

Pond Sizes – Approximate Shoreline Length: 0.7 miles

Distances: Parking to Panther Marsh: less than 100 feet

How to get there: From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 3 toward Tupper Lake. Continue for around 13-miles to Panther Mountain Road on the right. Follow Panther Mountain Road for 0.4 miles to the marsh on the left, park roadside on the right. There is a sandy, wide shoulder for parking.

Type of launch: Carry of less than 100 feet

Portage/Carry Details: The carry is not much at all, the water is road side, and you will need to carry across the road and over a guard rail. Launch can be tricky and a bit wet, water shoes are recommended.

Type of water: Well sheltered, calm and flat.
