'ROUND THE MOUNTAIN 2000 RESULTS
| The thirteenth annual 'Round the Mountain canoe race was held in near perfect paddling conditions, Sunday, May 21. A total of 72 boats, including guideboats, canoes and kayaks, competed. Racers gathered for the start at the AMPERSAND BAY BOAT CLUB, on Lower Saranac Lake. The 11 mile course went up the lake to the Saranac River, through First and Second Ponds down to the Lower Locks where participants negotiated a short carry around the locks. Once back on the water, racers crossed Oseetah Lake, and paddled to the finish line on Lake Flower in the village of Saranac Lake.
The race was organized by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, McDonnell's Adirondack Challenges of Lake Clear, and race series sponsor, Franklin County ARC, The Adirondack Arc. Sponsors for the 'Round the Mountain race included Grasse River Boatworks, Specialty Wood Products, North Country Natural Spring Water, Target Logistics, and The Cold River Coffee Company.
The next event in the Adirondack Arc Canoe Race Series is the Tupper Lake Flatwater Weekend. There will be a 9 mile race on Saturday, and a 40 mile race on Sunday. For more information contact MAC'S race hotline at 518 - 891 - 2744.
Larry Thomas, of Saratoga turned in the fastest men's, kayak, and overall time of the day at 1:23:18. The fastest women's, and kayak, time of the day was 1:28:07, earned by Janet Findley, of Lake Placid. The fastest canoe time of the day went to Gary Colton, of Clifton Park and Terry Crannell, of Queensbury. They crossed the line at 1:29:02. The fastest guideboat time went to James Fox of Rochester. His time was 1:56:15. In all, there were 25 boat class and age group categories represented in the race.
