A total of 82 paddlers took part in the St. Regis Canoe Classic at Paul Smith's College on Sunday, August 04, 2002. Following the one-mile fledgling event, the forty-nine boats began in a mass start along the shore of Lower St. Regis Lake under summer-like conditions (hot and slightly breezy). The boats quickly separated, as the various canoes and kayaks were paddling three separate routes.

Several volunteers, Paul Smith's College staff, alumni and current students handled the race registration, timing, and course markings, while the Paul Smiths - Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department was in charge of the post-race barbeque. The food was served to participants and family members as they finished, providing a smooth transition for all involved through the afternoon. Jim Tucker, the College's Recreation Director and Coach of the Marathon Canoe Team designed the commemorative ceramic coffee cups and t-shirts. Rachel Rickenbrode, a Recreation Intern from Houghton College is completing her internship experience on August 12. She handled many of the race duties and was the MC for the awards.
