Tupper Lake Flat Water Weekend - June 16
40 miler draws competitive field
Some of the elite paddlers in the Northeastern United States showed up on Sunday morning in Long Lake to paddle the 40 miles from Long Lake to Tupper Lake in the second event of the Tupper Lake Flat Water Weekend, sponsored by The Adirondack Arc, last weekend. Competitors paddled in one and two person canoes, kayaks and guideboats, and experienced a typically variable Adirondack weather day with varying sunshine and showers through out the day.
There were several very close finishes including the races between the first and second, and third and fourth teams in the two man amateur racing canoe divisions. Todd Roadman, Bedford, PA and Jeff Rankinen, Jersey Shore, PA bested Bob Zaveral of Mount Upton and Andy Melnychenko of Ithaca by 6 seconds after a thrilling sprint to the finish by both teams. Roadman and Rankinen had the fastest time of all boats in the race crossing the finish line at 5:07:03. The third and fourth place competition also ended in a sprint with Bruce Kennedy of Plattsburgh and Chad Kennedy of Saranac Lake outstretching Jeff Pederson of Gilbertsville, and Brian Young of Delmar by a margin of
1 second. David Hunter, Lake Placid, was the fastest kayaker finishing in 5:14:18, Dave Thomas, Watertown, was the fastest solo canoeist at 6:13:46 and Chris Hoyt was the fastest guideboater at 7:00:00. Chris wins the Adirondack Museum's Guideboat Champion award for his efforts.
