A palace made of ice is nice!

The first Saranac Lake Ice Palace was built in 1898, and was referred to as an "Ice Fortress." It took a few years, and some changes of design, for it to be consistently referred to as an Ice Palace.

Throughout the years, the Ice Palace has been a focal point of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, a ten day festival every February.

Today, the Ice Palace is constructed on the shore of Lake Flower. It is built with anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 (primarily 2-by 4-foot long) blocks and have at times measured up to 30-feet wide by 90-feet long and 60-feet high.

Each year is different, each year is unique, so make sure you plan a trip to Winter Carnival to see what the palace looks like every year!
