'Tis the Season

’Tis the season to get out and celebrate the holidays and all things winter. Well, Saranac Lake has no shortage of winter. In fact, we specialize in winter. You might have heard of our annual Winter Carnival, which is a ten day spectacle that involves outdoor adventure, competition, and lots of that unique village charm giving us our motto: decidedly different. In addition to Winter Carnival we are a hub of winter festivals and events. Below is a list to get you started on planning that trip where you can witness firsthand what we mean when we say decidedly different. For more information on events, check our events listings.

Turkey Trot

Sponsored by local bar and restaurant Bitters and Bones, the Turkey Trot race is a 5K walk or run that supports Saranac Lake Interfaith Food Pantry and Saranac Lake Students Needs Fund. The race’s route will take runners and walkers through downtown and land at Bitters and Bones where competitors (and spectators) can spend post race eating and responsibly drinking to their heart’s delight. If you haven’t yet taken a run or stroll through downtown, why not try the Turkey Trot?

Tree Lighting Ceremony

Saranac Lake’s tree lighting ceremony happens downtown at Berkeley Green, right off Main Street, every November. It’s a spectacular display of the town’s community spirit and joyful holiday cheer, regardless of which holidays you choose to celebrate. We hope that families of all kinds can enjoy this celebration with us. Who can resist the beauty of a lit up evergreen towering above?

Jingle Bell Snowshoe Race

The Paul Smith’s College Striders are hosting their annual 5K snowshoe race at the scenic Paul Smiths VIC. The trails at the VIC are well known for their beautiful vistas and expansive outlooks into the surrounding wetlands. Children and adults are welcomed to register for this event.

Sparkle Village Craft Show

Hosted by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, this annual holiday craft show offers a variety of regional vendors selling their handmade gifts. Artisans from all over the Adirondacks get together to show off their talents, providing crafts and other items you can gift to a loved one, or buy for yourself, of course. The event is located right downtown at the historic Harrietstown town hall.

First Night Saranac Lake

Spend the new year, literally the first night of 2019 on New Year’s Eve, surrounded by good music and good fun at this all-ages celebration. The event features 18 performers, including a variety of musical acts, at 10 venues, providing an eclectic blend of entertainment as the night progresses into a new, fabulous year, hopefully filled with mirth and plenty more vacations in Saranac Lake. This year you can expect a bluegrass duo, a rockabilly band, a comedian, a flamenco guitarist, and local favorites the Gibson Brothers. Check the event listing for updates on this musical marathon.

Start planning your winter fun in Saranac Lake today. We have cozy lodging and great restaurants to help you refuel after a day of fun
