The Pines Trail

The Pines are an interesting network of trails over a relatively small area. While the many intersections can be somewhat confusing it is a lovely area for the entire family to use and an excellent dog walking destination.

Trailhead: From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 86 in Saranac Lake follow Route 86 toward Lake Placid. After about 0.5 miles, stay straight onto Brandy Brook Road as Route 86 turns hard right around a traffic circle. Once you cross the railroad tracks take a left and almost immediately you will see a wooden sign marking The Pines, park off the road. While the trail system has a few access points, this is the easiest to find.

This trail network now has signs and benches to rest on. Starting from the Pine Street trailhead you will climb steeply for a ways to access the highest point along the trail network. Once atop here you will start to see trail intersections. None of the intersections or trails are marked, you will need to keep your bearing.

All of the trails are very easy to moderate in difficulty and good for the entire family; these trails are also an excellent dog walking area or just for an afternoon stroll. Two other trail access points are off Forest Hill Avenue, but they are slightly more difficult to locate, but you might pop out onto them as you hike around the spaghetti like trails.
